Turkey Vase Flowers Snow Farm

Description:

This pitcher appears to be hand-painted, is approximately 75-100 years old and is in very good condition. The note (number 260) refers to my grandmother who was born in 1876. The drawing (number 257) is my reproduction of the information on the bottom of the vase (number 259).  The vase is 6 1/2 inches high at the handle, 6 inches at the bowl, 6 1/8 at the high part of the spout, 7 ½ inches across including the handle and the end of the spout.  I would say that the light color is more of a cream than the pictures show and the flowers are more pink/red.  The pictures make the flowers look to have more of a blue tone to them. You can see the one line in the spout which is a crack (see picture 258).  There are signs of paint chipping under the lip of the spout and on the handle (picture 255 and 257).  However, there are no indications of any chips on the pot.  On the front of the pitcher there are some dark spots which do not come off (see picture number 255) and one spot on the middle of lip that looks like a paint flaw (picture number 258).  In the picture it may look like a crack.

Appraisal:

The Limoges region of France has been a center of porcelain manufacture for over two hundred years.  Your ewer was most likely made early in the 20th century.  From the line along the spout and handle we can see that it is a molded piece.  These were made in fairly large numbers for export and I would expect this one to bring around $30 at auction. This is based on the information and photos provided.

Antique Mirror

Description:

This is an antique mirror with a console. It is in carved wood and gesso with gold leaf finish. The console has a marble base. The condition is ok.  My grandmother told me that this mirror was given to her when she was young as a present. She was told that the mirror was from France from the first decade of the 18th century. She was also told that the marble base of the console was Carrara marble.

Appraisal:

Looking at your mirror with console it struck me that they did not quite look right together and made me wonder if they were a marriage.  The scale seems a little off and the decorations on the mirror are more foliate while those on the base are ribbons and swags.  Taking that into consideration, I would probably offer them separately if they came to auction. Unfortunately, without seeing the underside of the table or the back of the mirror it is impossible to tell construction and therefore the age.  The mirror plates do look too clean to be early 18th century and would think they were made more likely in the late 19th or early 20th century.  If so the table and mirror would each be estimated around $1000 each. This estimate is based on the information and photos provided.

Combat Zone Book

Description:

This book is called “If I Die in a Combat Zone Box Me Up and Ship Me Home” by Tim O'Brien.  The publisher is Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence 1973-Third Printing.  It has the following inscription: “To Terry, Peace, Tim O'Brien." I’ve seen second printings going for $1,000 and up and wondered what the worth of my copy might be.

Appraisal:

Unsigned third printings retail between $100 and $400.  Signed hard cover editions in general retail between $200 and up depending on the edition, and whom it is inscribed to and also the condition of the book and dust jacket.  Assuming you have a dust jacket in good condition I would think the auction estimate would be $200/400.  This is based on the information and photos provided.

Italian Pitcher

Description:

We acquired this pitcher from our dear neighbors about 17 years ago. It has grapes painted on it, with a sky blue background. They said that the pitcher was "old." There are spots on the handle in the curled vine, and a spot to the left of the handle just above the grape leaf.  On the bottom is written “1454 Italy.” We don't know anything else about it.  Both have passed on. We are curious as to how "old" it is and it's origin, and of course if it is of any value.

Appraisal:

This is a charming pitcher, made in Italy in the 20th century.  It's very pretty, but is not terribly old and is worth about $100/200.  This is based on the photos and information provided.

Heidleberg Etching

Description:

I can't make out the signature of this piece. The title is Heidelberg. The title is hand written at the bottom left. Also hand written is the word “Original” and then the artist’s signature. It is framed and matted. The measurements of the etching are 10" by 12". Including frame the measurements are 16 1/2" by 18 3/4".

Appraisal:

Based on these photographs and the information provided, it is hard to be positive, but I think that this is a nice 19th/early 20th century German print, probably worth in the $200/400 range.

Jade Pin

Description:

This jade brooch measures 2 1/2" high and about 1 3/4" wide and 1" deep. The mark on the back is CHINASIIVEE.  I believe the brooch is jade, silver and enamel. One of the small enameled leaves is missing also the closure is missing on the back. I found this brooch several years ago at a thrift store and know nothing about the history.

Appraisal:

This is a lovely brooch.  I'm sorry to say that it is very difficult to judge the quality of the stones from photographs. It seems to be decorative "costume" jewelry.  Given the information and photos provided, this brooch’s worth is probably in the $300/500 range.

Rocking Chair from Herbert

Description:

This rocking chair came to us from Mrs. George Barley who lived at 64 Eddy Street in W. Newton, Massachusetts.  During the depression Mr. & Mrs. Barley rented out the top floor of their home to a family named Peabody.  During financial stress, Mr. Frank Peabody paid his rent with this rocking chair in lieu of cash.  The rocker is mahogany; the seat is made from one slab of wood.  There is a pewter (or maybe silver) plate on the back of the rocker which reads “Frank from Herbert - June 28th, 1887.

Appraisal:

Your chair has an overall 'Windsor' look, but the detailed carving on the crest rail and arms has a Victorian feel.  It is quite possible that the chair was new or near new when it was gifted from Herbert to Frank.  At auction I would expect to to bring $200/400.  This estimate is based on the photos and information provided.

Buddah Painting

Description:

This painting is on what seems to be masonite.  It has a frame that matches the colors in the painting and is original to the piece, or seems to be as older labels on the back relate directly to it.  The piece is signed WAYNE DAVIS.  There is also an Asian character/signature in the middle right corner of the painting. The back of the painting has a label attached which states; WAYNE DAVIS / BELLVIEW RD / LOCUST VALLEY NY.  Another label attached says; SOLD TO CHAS PFIZER $600.

Appraisal:

Based on the photos, information provided and what I found about the artist, Wayne Davis, I believe that $200-400 is about what it would bring at auction.

Satinwood Bedroom Suite

Description

This is a satinwood four piece bedroom set we bought at a local auction in the early 1980's. Prompted by knowledge gained on Antiques Roadshow, I took a new look at these beautiful pieces. Notable are a "profligate" use of satinwood, very fine grained secondary wood, shrunken cabinet door rails and drawer fronts, antique door and drawer pulls, circa 1800's broken pediment motif and the wardrobe which separates into four elements. Minor blemishes dot top surfaces, slightly warped cabinet doors and one large drawer has slight damage, replaced marble on the wash stand and there is some deterioration of most of the five mirrors - all beveled.

Appraisal:

This is not exactly a suite of furniture but a collection of pieces with similar age.  Some appear to be more mid-19th century Victorian in style while others appear a little later, showing characteristics of the aesthetic movement or the Eastlake style.  That being said if these items came to auction I would recommend selling the pieces individually, with the collection expected to bring around $3000 total. This estimate is based on the information and photos provided.

Pearl's Pretty Pets Book

Description:

This is a book called Pearl's Pretty Pets.  There is no author listed.  The publisher is W.B. Conkey, Chicago 1899.  It has approximately 72 pages and the book is 7 1/2" x 10 ¼."  It has a color cover and color first page.  Printed under the title on the first page "A Charming Alphabet and a Collection of the Most Delightful Stories of All Kinds” ...."For Boys and Girls"..."With Choice Poems from the Best Juvenile Writers.”  The book lists each letter of the alphabet with a couple of paragraphs for each letter. There are a series of stories including "Jack and the Bean-Stalk," "The Three Bears," "Robbie's Sleigh Ride," "The Hatchet and the Flail," "The Princess Leona” and "Malibran and Little Pierre” as well as a few poems.

Appraisal:

The W.B. Conkey Company dates back to the 19th century and by the turn of the century had one of the largest printing plants in the world.  Books such as yours were produced in fairly large editions with only those in pristine condition bringing much at auction.  From your images and the information provided, I would think your book is worth around $30.

Secretary

Description:

This oak secretary has been in our family for more than 30 years.  It is in good condition, and has 5 shelves, 3 drawers and several compartments behind the door.  It has some beautiful wood detail on the door and above the mirror. It stands approximately 72 inches tall (including mirror) and is approximately 38 inches wide.

Appraisal:

This is a traditional Victorian secretary, often referred to as a side-by-side.  It probably dates to the 19th century although examples were made into the 20th century.  Unfortunately the demand for these quaint writing desks is not what it used to be.  Currently they tend to bring $400/600 at auction.  This estimate is based on the information and photos provided.

Shirley Temple Photo

Description:

This is a 5 1/2" x 7" black and white studio photo of Shirley Temple which is autographed in GREEN INK as such, "To Muriel, Love Shirley Temple." There is a small 20th Century Fox logo in the lower right hand corner. The photo is of the "thicker" cardboard style (not a flimsy photo). I found it in an envelope of playbills, trip schedules, photos etc. collected by a woman named Muriel Barbra Gray.  On the back of the Shirley Temple photo Mrs. Gray wrote "Received Nov 14th, 1939 Tuesday" and "11 years old April 23, 1939.

Appraisal:

Shirley Temple related items are always collectible.  Signed studio stills such as yours come up at auction fairly regularly and tend to bring $100/200. This estimate is based on the photo and information provided.

Deck Chair

Description:

This deck chair has been in our family for more than 30 years. My parents acquired it in Georgia from an antiques dealer, who told them it came from a German cruise liner.  The caning in the seat is not original, but the piece is in very good condition.  There is an inscription on the headrest, “Seereise-Comfort-Gesellschaft.” Next to this is a small card holder, where a guest could reserve his seat.

Appraisal:

While your chair does look comfortable we have to take into account the history behind it and the type of manufacture involved in the making of the chair.  Furniture such as this and those made for other commercial ventures were ordered and produced in large numbers and thus are less desirable to collectors.  If the chair had come from a famous ship it could have some associated value but as yours stands I would think it should bring around $100 at auction. This estimate is based on the photos and information provided.

Hopkins Folk Art Painting

Description:

This painting came from my grandparent’s farmhouse in Tiffin/Republic, Ohio.  It has been on the farm as long as anyone can remember.

It is oil on canvas in its original gold wooden frame, and has been called “A Boy and His Dog”.  It is a boy on a hilltop with his dog.  There is a lake/river and trees in the background.  The oil I.D. size is 23 by 29 inches and the overall framed size is 29 by 35 inches.  The painting is unsigned. This folk art painting was suggested as a possibility, to be attributed to M. W. Hopkins, c.1830’s-40, of the Columbus, Ohio area by a couple antique folk art dealers.  I do not have any documentation attributing it to Hopkins.

Appraisal:

This is a very interesting painting.  In order to give you an accurate assessment we would need to see it. A number of portraits by M.W. Hopkins have come up for sale at auction recently.  If yours is indeed by the artist, it may be worth in the $6000/12,000 range.

Lola Montez Portrait

Description:

This is a portrait of Lola Montez on porcelain plaque.  The back is stamped in blue that reads “RPM Germany.”  I purchased it 15 years ago at an estate sale for $150.00. The plaque seems to be in mint condition, while the frame has structural issues due to age but still intact.  We were able to find information about Lola Montez, a.k.a. Liza Gilbert from Ireland, but do not know any about the plaque itself.

Appraisal:

This would be $300-500 at auction. Portrait Plaques on porcelain were really popular in the 19th/20th century and the finest examples were produced by KPM (konigliche porzellan manufaktur…the royal porcelain factory). This is really lovely, but produced by a lesser maker and would bring a lower result..i.e. the $300-500. The estimate is based on the photos and information provided.

Güterbock Painting

Description:

This painting is 28½ inches high by 22½ inches wide and signed in the lower left by “L(?) Güterbock” – possibly the German painter Leopold Güterbock, circa 1820-1881.  Colors are red, brown, yellow, and blue, but cleaning is needed.  There is a 2” tear towards the upper right corner and four gouges ranging between ¼ inch and ¾ inch, one of which breaks through the canvas.  The painting is from the antiques shop my mother owned in the 1950s and 1960s.

Appraisal:

This looks to be a reproduction after the original painting, probably produced in the early 20th century. Based on the visible lower edge, as well as the gouge in the upper right side, this looks like a work on pressed paper board, rather than an original work on canvas. This was a very typical method of mass reproduction, and the high quality of color often misleads people into thinking that these are original works of art. A photograph of the back would confirm my opinion. If  I am correct, then this work would have only decorative value, which because of the damage, would be very modest.  This is based on the photos and information provided.

If this is an original painting by this artist, then the fair market value would probably be in the range of $3,000-5,000.

Wooden Table

Description:

This is an old oak table and I am looking for any information you can provide about it.

Appraisal:

This appears to be a metamorphic table probably from the 19th century.  While interesting and useful it seems to be of simple or country manufacture.  Based on the photos and information provided, at auction I would estimate this at $400/600.

Card Table

Description:

I received this card table from my grandmother. The table swivels to provide a base for the top when it is open. My grandfather owned an antiques shop on East 57th Street in Manhattan in the '20's and '30's. The table has been refinished. I was curious about it as I've never seen one quite like it.

Appraisal:

From the images provided I would think your table is probably mahogany.  Without seeing it in person it is hard to date it exactly, but it appears to be late 19th or early 20th century.  We see these come up at auction fairly often and they tend to bring $800/1200 with more elaborate or older versions selling for more. This estimate is based on the information and photos provided.
